Data Viz: How The Super Bowl States Listen

superbowlhiphop_legendOn Sunday, two titans of football will clash in San Francisco: the Carolina Panthers and the Denver Broncos.

These competitors are separated by 1,357 miles as the crow flies; one sits in the mountains of the west, the other on the eastern seaboard. They’re different, and so it’s no surprise that they have different favorites when it comes to music.

To learn about how these football fans differ as music fans, three members of the Spotify Analytics team — Edward Lee, Head of Apps and Visualization; Evan Sheehan, Designer; and Manish Nag, Manager of Research — analyzed aggregated, anonymous listening to find out which artists, in a variety of genres, skew most strongly towards one Super Bowl state or the other.

The result: a series of graphs showing the artists each state loves the most, relative to the other. They compare the percentage of each state’s streams over the last two weeks, by genre. Among other things, this tells us that when it comes to country artists, North Carolina loves some Corey Smith, while Colorado is more into Chris Ledoux.
